How to Make a Clay Fish ~ A perfect project for kids.
This is a Great project you can do with your kids. It is easy, a bit messy, sensory, and fun. 🙂
First, you need to make the Clay. We made so much paper mache plaster clay, so we decided to keep using it until it is all gone.
This is how you make the plaster clay:
Tile Grout Glue
White Acrylic Paint
Mix at least 1 bag of white flour. Make sure you know how many cups of flour and add half that of salt, so for example, 2 cups of flour needs 1 cup of salt. Then add the salt. Mix water and add 1 roll of toilet paper. Mix it all in. Add water to suit. Rip some pages of newspaper up and add it to it. Add 1 cup of PVA glue and 1/2 cup of Tile Grout glue. Mix in White acrylic paint until it is all white. Mix until it is the same consistency as bread dough.
How to make the fish.
Roll out a handful of clay and flatten it using a rolling pin stick. Use a knife and shape the fish. Flatten another piece of clay and make the fin. Use water to make clay sticky and stick to the side of fish. Smooth out the edges so that the edge of fin becomes one with the body. Make the fish eye by rolling up a piece of clay into a ball. Stick to the fish by dipping in water to make sticky.
Clay tip: If your clay is too wet then roll it in some flour. This will make it easier to work with.
If you live in a sunny place like us, in beautiful tropical Australia, all you have to do is to let your clay fish dry in the sun. If not, bake it in the oven on about 150 degrees Celcius for about 15 minutes.
Paint your clay fish sculpture.
The paint job is the BEST part of this project. To get the glossy multicoloured effect, all you have to is to follow this simple paint instruction.
First paint fish with acrylic paint in red. Mix in some black as well. Then use spray paint in white and gold. Spray a light layer of white (not enough to completely cover the red/black paint). Then spray with gold paint on top, but only a very light paint job so that you just speckle gold on top of the fish. Finish off by spraying a gloss enamel on top.
