How to Crochet ~ A Simple Tutorial
Crochet is very simple, and it opens up an unlimited amount of opportunities for creations. All you need is a crochet hook, yarn, and time (and some patience) 🙂 You can follow crochet patterns or create your own patterns. Crochet is basically just making loops using a hook and yarn. Depending on what pattern you use, the crochet stitches could be different. Below is an image of Stitch differences between US and UK stitches.
UK and US stitch comparison.
In this tutorial, I will show use UK stitch abbreviation. For US stitch tutorial, please click here.

The crochet hook is held just like a pen (see image below).

What is Crochet Gauge
Crochet gauge indicates how tight or loose you crochet, and it is used to ensure that your final crochet piece is the same size as pattern intended. Crochet a block about 4 inches square and pin it to a flat surface. If your piece is bigger or smaller than the gauge indicated in the pattern, change to either a smaller or larger hook, or tighten or loosen your gauge.
What is Crochet Yarn Weight
Yarn weight is often displayed as ply where 1 ply, 2 ply, 3 ply are very fine yarn used in lace and often Irish Crochet. It is often referred to as Lace Yarn. 4 ply is superfine yarn and 5 ply is fine yarn. 8 ply is light weight yarn and 10 ply is medium weight yarn. 12 ply is bulky yarn. Using different yarn plys gives the effect to the piece you are creating, whether it is a bulky scarf of an Irish lace motif.
What is the difference between Crochet Hook Sizes in letter or numbers
US metric uses letters when displaying crochet hook size. UK uses a number, rather than a ltter. The higher the letter or number, the thicker the crochet hook size.
